About Us

Jacqueline Neilson, DVM, DACVB

Dr. Neilson obtained her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree with honors from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 1993.  Following graduation, she moved to Oregon and entered small animal private practice.  After two years in private practice, Dr. Neilson was selected as the  first conforming behavioral resident at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. There she successfully completed her 2-year residency in animal behavior and passed the board certification process to become a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists (DACVB, click here for a link to the ACVB site) in 1997.  Dr. Neilson is the only board certified veterinary behaviorist in the state of Oregon. 

In addition to providing consultations for pets and their owners at the Animal Behavior Clinic, Dr. Neilson frequently lectures nationally and internationally to veterinarians about animal behavior.  For several years she taught the veterinary behavior program at the University of Florida and currently teaches veterinary behavior at OSU College of Veterinary Medicine. She also acts as consultant for various companies, conducts non-invasive clinical behavioral research and is an editor of the Veterinary Medicine journal.  She has published several articles and book chapters. Her first book, Blackwell's Five-Minute Veterinary Consult Clinical Companion Canine and Feline Behavior, was published in 2007. 

Dr. Neilson serves on the Board of Trustees of the Oregon Humane Society and the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon. She serves as a Delegate for the State of Oregon on the American Veterinary Medical Association House of Delegates.  She served as President of the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association for the 2007-08 term.  Past roles include serving on the Boards of the Portland Veterinary Medical Association and American College of Veterinary Behaviorists.

Dr. Neilson shares her home her husband, four cats(Moe in above photo)and two dogs.

 

Christopher Pachel, DVM

  

Dr. Chris Pachel graduated from veterinary school at the University of Minnesota in 2002.  After working as a general practice veterinarian for two years, he completed one year of residency training in veterinary behavior at the University of Minnesota and then an additional 3.5 years of supervised mentorship with Dr. Jacqui Neilson at the Animal Behavior Clinic in Portland, OR.  Dr. Pachel has successfully completed his advanced behavioral training and will be sitting the American College of Veterinary Behavior board examination in October 2010.  He has practiced in the field of veterinary behavior since 2004 and has run a successful housecall behavior practice in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area since 2005. 

 

Dr. Pachel recently published an article entitled "Comparison of feline water consumption between still and flowing water sources: a pilot study" in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior; Clinical applications and research.  He co-taught the core veterinary behavior curriculum at the University of Minnesota in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and has guest-lectured in numerous undergraduate courses.  He has also lectured at regional and national conference including the 2010 Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association and the 2010 American Animal Hospital Association conferences. 

His approach to behavioral therapy combines learning theory, medical training and experience with compassion and effective communication to create a balanced treatment plan that is tailored to the individual patient's needs. Dr. Pachel's approach emphasizes the importance of the human animal bond and the role that companion animals play in the lives of their families.


 

 

 

 

Roman


 

Roman is our client care representative and will be assiting you in setting up your appointment and in ongoing communications with the Animal Behavior Clinic.  He graduated from the University of Portland and worked in the insurance industry for several years before combining his passion for pets with his exceptional customer service skills to become a client care representive in a general veterinary practice.  He joined the Animal Behavior Clinic in 2008.  He owns and shows Doberman Pinschers (Herman pictured).
